There Are No Words        Palimpsests    2018

These works continue my exploration of communication.  Unlike the trauma works that featured chairs as a platform of communication, these are palimpsests that reflect upon the forces from within and without that suppress revelation.   Sometimes there are no words that can offer solace to an injured soul and sometimes healing words remain hidden.

The phrases contained in these paintings were overheard in discussions surrounding the ‘Me Too’ movement.

There are many reasons for disturbing information not to be revealed.  The forces may be political or social, personal or psychological.  A resistance to deal with painful experiences often lies in the realm of personal protection from trauma felt or inflicted.  As seen in cases of conflict traumatic stress, memories are often buried and avoided.   Recent accounts of sexual transgression reveal pressures to quash exposure by those in positions of power.   Many victims have succumbed because of perceived personal embarrassment, professional consequences or feelings that they would not be understood.
