memento                                               2012

After experiencing the death of my mother to Alzheimer’s disease, the subject of my paintings transitioned from the things we think about, to the experience of how we think about them.  Many of the same patterns, text, formulas and images that had inhabited my previous compositions battled one another for attention in my paintings.  Performing like fading memories obscuring one another, they mixed fact and fiction, dream and reality and the richness of the past and the fearful void of confusion, isolation and emptiness.  Visual ‘Noise’ obscures what once was known or should have been recognized, but is no longer familiar nor available.
