“Nomads All”

Paintings and sculpture by Roger Rapp

Roger Rapp’s abstract paintings typically investigate the commonalities of form and theme that appear in science, philosophy, religion and art.  In this exhibit, Rapp used compositions for his paintings excerpted from Michelangelo’s fresco,  “Last Judgment”.  He blended this story of the judgment of souls with consideration of contemporary genetic research, cultural anthropology and environmentalism so as to provoke a dialogue regarding ethics, personal responsibility and survival.

The artworks of “Nomads All” were first shown as Roger’s contribution to the iMiNiMi exhibition at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan in 2002.  The scale of that venue allowed the presentation of the entire body of paintings, drawings and sculpture as a single composition spanning twenty feet in width and reaching nearly twenty feet in height.  It placed the viewer in confrontation with an event of monumental proportions.  The grand main gallery at the Krasl enabled the abstract composition, accomplished with a combination of drawings, paintings and sculpture to evoke some of the power of the original ‘Last Judgement’ fresco in the Vatican or the cave paintings of Lascaux in southern France.  In the installation at RappCity, a  modest venue, a small selection drawn from the original composition were presented in a more human scale allowing the viewer a more intimate contact with the work and the hand of the artist.
